How to Transcribe a YouTube Video Without Captions

How to Transcribe a YouTube Video Without Captions

You can transcribe a YouTube video without captions when its spoken audio is accessible to the transcription service. An AI speech transcription tool recognizes words in the audio; it does not require a pre-existing subtitle track.

Open the YouTube to Text Converter, paste an individual public video URL, sign in and follow the language and queue controls. After processing, review the transcript and export TXT, SRT or VTT. The signed-in Free plan includes 30 minutes per month, with a 15-minute limit per recording.

Caption Extraction and Audio Transcription Are Different

A caption extractor retrieves a subtitle track that already exists. If no track is available, that method has no caption text to return. Audio transcription creates new text from the recording's speech and can therefore work when subtitles are missing.

A creator's captions may contain editorial corrections, speaker names or translations. A newly generated transcript can mishear those details, and it is not a copy of the creator's caption file.

Source conditionWhat to check
Clear speech, no captionsQueue audio transcription and review the words
Captions availableDecide whether you need the original captions or a new speech transcript
Silent video with words on screenSpeech transcription cannot read text from video frames
Music or overlapping voicesReview uncertain audio carefully
Restricted or unavailable videoResolve source access or use an original file you own

Check the Source Before Starting

Play a representative part of the video. Confirm that it contains audible speech, rather than music alone or a silent slide presentation. Note the language, overlapping voices and technical terms.

Copy the URL of one public video or Short. Playlist and channel import are not supported. Private, age-restricted and regionally unavailable content can fail even if it plays in your own signed-in browser.

Generate and Review the Transcript

  1. Paste the video URL into the YouTube workspace.
  2. Sign in and check the recording's duration against your allowance.
  3. Choose the spoken language or automatic detection, then start processing through the queue.
  4. Listen around uncertain words and correct names, numbers and punctuation.
  5. Save the reviewed transcript and select an export format.

For an interview, review who is speaking yourself. The workspace does not automatically separate or identify speakers. For a tutorial, verify commands and menu names rather than trusting spelling alone.

Download Text or Create Subtitle Files

Export TXT for plain notes without caption timing. Choose SRT or VTT to generate timed subtitles from the reviewed transcript. Check cue times against the same video edit, especially if you removed an introduction from a local copy.

Use the timestamp and export guide when you need a transcript with or without timestamps. An SRT or VTT export creates a new file; it does not automatically upload captions back to YouTube.

What to Do When Import Fails

Missing captions are not, by themselves, evidence that the audio cannot be transcribed. Check the URL and source accessibility first. If you own a local copy, use MP4 to Text instead of repeatedly submitting the same inaccessible link.

Uploading a different edit changes caption timing. Keep the original start time or use the subtitle timing adjuster for a known constant offset after transcription.
